The ISCAR 5550496 is a VCMT221SM-geometry turning insert in the IC807 grade, designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake and positive side clearance, a 0.25-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64-inch (0.0157-inch) corner radius. The TiAlN coating is applied via PVD process, delivering high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. The SM chip breaker geometry is suited for finishing and medium machining applications. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
The 5550496 is rated for use on steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), and superalloy (S) workpiece materials. The IC807 grade provides high wear resistance to moderate wear resistance and toughness across these material groups. With a maximum depth of cut of 0.118 inch (3.00 mm) and the SM chip breaker, it is best suited for light to medium material removal passes where surface finish and tool life consistency are the priority. It is a single-insert package sold in a minimum order quantity of 10 inserts.
Designed for use in VCMT-style turning toolholders that accept 221 (ANSI) or 110304 (ISO) size inserts with screw-clamping insert holding. Refer to toolholder documentation to confirm insert pocket geometry and clearance code compatibility before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists following machine tool lockout and spindle-stop procedures before any insert change. Use the correct torx or hex key to the toolholder manufacturer-specified torque for the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide insert. Inspect the insert seat and chip pocket for debris before seating the insert. Dispose of worn carbide inserts in accordance with local regulations for hard-metal waste.
