The ISCAR 5550484 is a solid carbide triangular turning insert in the TPMT style, designed for precision external turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. Carrying the IC807 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability suited to interrupted cuts and demanding feed rates. The positive rake geometry and 11-degree relief angle reduce cutting forces and promote clean chip evacuation. At 11 mm in length with a 1/4-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, it fits standard TPMT-compatible toolholders and is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is rated for primary workpiece materials classified under ISO material groups M, P, and S, covering stainless steels, carbon and alloy steels, and superalloys including titanium and high-temperature alloys. The Isoturn series designation places it in ISCAR's general-purpose turning line, making it appropriate for a range of finishing to medium roughing passes. Maximum depth of cut is 3 mm, positioning this insert primarily for finishing and semi-finishing applications where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are critical. Screw-in holding method ensures secure clamping in standard TPMT-style toolholders.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for TPMT21-style toolholders accepting a 1/4-inch inscribed circle triangular insert with screw clamping. Compatible with ISO material groups M, P, and S workpiece materials as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine in a full stop and lockout-tagout procedure completed before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to tighten the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque, and inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the insert. Do not force the insert into a worn or damaged pocket, as improper seating affects surface finish and can cause premature insert failure. Verify runout and tool offset after each insert change before resuming cutting.
