The ISCAR 5550298 is a solid carbide DCMT-style turning insert designed for precision metal cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during high-speed cutting. The insert has a 55-degree diamond shape (Shape Code D), a 0.25-inch inscribed circle, and a corner radius of 0.0079 inches. With a positive rake geometry and a chip breaker designation of T, this insert is engineered to deliver controlled chip evacuation and consistent tool life when turning stainless steel and steel workpieces.
This insert fits within the Isoturn series and is suited for external turning applications in both production and job-shop environments. Its DCMT geometry with a 7-degree relief angle (Clearance Code C) and Tolerance Code M makes it a reliable choice for medium-duty turning passes. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel (ISO Material Code M) and steel (ISO Material Code P), making it applicable across a wide range of ferrous turning jobs. A screw-type insert holding method ensures secure seating in compatible toolholders. This insert is compliant with ISO 13399 tooling standards.
Designed for use in DCMT-compatible screw-clamp turning toolholders within the ISCAR Isoturn series. Suitable for turning stainless steel and steel workpieces on CNC lathes and turning centers that accept inserts with a 0.25-inch inscribed circle and a 0.1102-inch hole diameter.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine locked out per shop safety procedures. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket before torquing the clamping screw; do not force or hammer the insert into position. Inspect the insert seat and screw for debris or damage before each insert change. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's torque specification for the clamping screw, as this value is not specified by the insert manufacturer.
