The ISCAR 5550221 is a CCMT-style solid carbide turning insert in the Isoturn series, coated with TiAlN via a PVD process for enhanced wear resistance and thermal stability. It features an 80-degree diamond insert shape, a 3/8 inch (0.3752 inch) inscribed circle, and a 1/32 inch (0.0315 inch) corner radius. With a positive rake geometry and SM chip breaker, this insert is engineered for controlled chip evacuation during turning operations. It is secured using a screw-type insert holding method and carries a clearance code of C and tolerance code of M, consistent with ISO 13399 standards. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades aside, this insert is installed and managed by CNC machinists and tooling specialists.
The 5550221 is suited for turning operations on a range of workpiece materials, including stainless steel (M), carbon and alloy steel (P), and superalloys (S). The SM chip breaker geometry supports medium-duty cutting conditions. Its 9.70 mm insert length and maximum depth of cut of 3.00 mm (0.1181 inch) make it appropriate for finishing and semi-finishing passes on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert fits toolholders designed for CCMT-style inserts per ISO 13399 specifications.

Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and all axes locked out per shop safety procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamping screw for wear or contamination before seating the new insert. Confirm insert orientation matches the intended cutting geometry before resuming operation.
