The ISCAR 5509949 is a CNMG431F3P solid carbide turning insert in grade IC8150, designed for external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. The insert features a CVD-applied TiCN and Al2O3 multilayer coating that provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted cuts. With an 80-degree diamond shape, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0156 inch corner radius, this insert is suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes. The F3P chip breaker geometry promotes positive rake cutting action and effective chip control across a range of feed rates and depths of cut. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert as part of standard toolholder maintenance.
The 5509949 is part of ISCARs Isoturn series, which targets steel and cast iron turning applications. The primary workpiece material designation is P (steel), with secondary suitability for K-grade materials such as cast iron. It is appropriate for use in production turning environments — both high-volume manufacturing and job shop settings — where consistent surface finish and tool life are required. The clamp and pin holding method provides secure seating in compatible CNMG-style toolholders. Maximum depth of cut is 0.138 inches (3.50 mm), making this insert best applied in finishing and light semi-finishing passes rather than heavy roughing.
Designed for use in CNMG-style toolholders that accept a 431 insert size with clamp and pin holding. Primary workpiece material compatibility is ISO P (steels); secondary compatibility is ISO K (cast irons). Specific toolholder compatibility should be verified against the ISCAR Isoturn toolholder catalog using the CNMG431 insert seat specification.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the toolholder removed from the turret or confirmed locked before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp screw per the toolholder manufacturers specification — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the insert. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface for debris or damage before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and edge alignment.
