The ISCAR 5509900 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VCMT332SM geometry, coated with TiAlN via a PVD process under the IC806 manufacturer grade. It belongs to the Isoturn series and is designed for precision external and internal turning operations. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape with a positive rake angle and a 7-degree relief angle, providing a free-cutting geometry suited for high-performance machining. At 16.60 mm (0.6535 inches) in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, this insert fits standard VCMT-style toolholders. A licensed machinist or CNC turning technician installs and indexes this insert during production or maintenance of turning setups.
This insert is optimized for superalloy workpiece materials, classified under primary workpiece material code S. Superalloys such as nickel- and cobalt-based alloys present significant machining challenges, and the IC806 submicron carbide substrate combined with TiAlN PVD coating provides the heat and wear resistance required in these applications. Typical use cases include aerospace component turning, power generation part finishing, and other demanding metalcutting operations where tool life and edge integrity are critical. The SM chip breaker designation supports controlled chip formation across a range of cutting depths, with a maximum depth of cut of 2.50 mm (0.0984 inches).
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for VCMT-style screw-on turning toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert with a clearance code C and tolerance code M. Verify toolholder seat geometry before installation.
This insert is installed and indexed by a qualified machinist or CNC turning technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing or indexing the insert. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder specification. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear, chips, or debris before seating the new insert, as pocket damage will compromise edge repeatability and can cause premature insert failure.
