The ISCAR 5508648 is a solid carbide turning insert in the LNMX221016LHT geometry, part of the Heliturn series. It features a CVD-applied dual-layer coating of TiCN and Al2O3, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection during continuous and interrupted cuts. The insert measures 22.00 mm (0.866 inches) in length with a width of 9.40 mm (0.370 inches) and a corner radius of 1/16 inch (0.0625 inches). The rectangular shape (ISO shape code L) with a 90-degree included angle and 0-degree relief angle (clearance code N) makes it well suited to high-material-removal roughing and semi-finishing passes. This is a left-hand cutting insert with a positive rake and HT chip breaker geometry.
This insert is designed for turning applications on cast iron and steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes K and P. It is used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes where left-hand cutting direction is required. The Heliturn series geometry supports helical interpolation and turn-mill operations as well as conventional OD turning. The maximum depth of cut is 15.00 mm (0.591 inches). The insert is held in place by a screw-type clamping method and conforms to ISO 13399 tooling data standards. It is suited to production environments where consistent tool life and chip control on ferrous materials are priorities.
Designed for use in LNMX-style screw-lock turning toolholders that accept the Heliturn series insert geometry. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron (ISO K) and steel (ISO P). Confirm toolholder pocket dimensions match the LNMX221016 insert size code before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket before tightening the clamping screw, and inspect the pocket and screw threads for wear or debris prior to seating. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidelines for the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate.
