Product Description

The ISCAR 5508171 is a VNMG 331-NF indexable turning insert designed for precision finishing operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It is manufactured from solid carbide and coated with TiCN and Al2O3 via a CVD coating process, delivering high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a negative side clearance and a positive rake geometry. The inscribed circle measures 0.375 inches, insert length is 0.6535 inches (16.60 mm), thickness is 0.1874 inches, and the corner radius is 0.0157 inches (1/64 inch). Held by clamp or pin, this insert is sized to the ANSI code 331 and ISO code 160404.

This insert is intended for finishing cuts on steel, cast iron, and hardened materials in both production and job-shop turning environments. The NF chip breaker geometry is optimized for light finishing passes with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0984 inches (2.50 mm). The IC8150 grade provides high wear resistance for steel (P-class) and cast iron (K-class) applications, and high wear resistance for hardened materials (H-class). Machinists and CNC operators working with tight surface finish tolerances will find the grade and geometry combination well suited to high-speed finishing passes. The insert conforms to ISO 13399 standards for tooling data representation.

Key Features

  • CVD-applied TiCN and Al2O3 coating for high wear resistance in steel, cast iron, and hardened material applications
  • 35-degree diamond (rhombic) V-shape insert with negative side clearance and positive rake for finishing geometry
  • NF chip breaker optimized for finishing operations with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0984 inches (2.50 mm)
  • IC8150 grade rated for P-class steel (high to moderate wear resistance and toughness), K-class cast iron (high wear resistance), and H-class hardened materials (high wear resistance)
  • Compatible with clamp and pin insert-holding methods
  • Conforms to ISO 13399 tooling data standards

Compatibility

Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct equivalent for VNMG 331-NF geometry turning inserts in toolholders accepting ANSI size 331 or ISO 160404 inserts with a 0.150-inch hole diameter. Part of the ISCAR Isoturn series.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is indexed to a safe position before changing inserts. Seat the insert firmly against the pocket locating surfaces before engaging the clamp or pin, and verify there is no rocking or gap before taking a cut. Do not exceed the rated maximum depth of cut for this insert geometry.
