The ISCAR 5508170 is a VNMG-style indexable turning insert in the Isoturn series, designed for precision external and internal turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured from solid carbide with a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, TiCN, and TiN, this insert carries the IC8150 manufacturer grade and is built to handle demanding cutting conditions. The 35-degree diamond insert shape (V code) with a neutral 0-degree relief angle and positive rake geometry delivers predictable chip formation and stable cutting forces. The NF chip breaker is engineered for finishing passes where controlled chip flow and surface finish are the primary objectives. Licensed machinists, CNC operators, and tooling specialists working in production environments select this insert for its wear resistance and thermal stability under continuous cutting loads.
The 5508170 is suited for turning cast iron and steel workpiece materials, corresponding to ISO material codes K and P. The NF chip breaker configuration makes it most appropriate for light to moderate finishing cuts rather than heavy roughing. Typical applications include shaft turning, bore finishing, and contour turning on horizontal and vertical turning centers. The insert seats using a clamp and pin holding method, compatible with standard VNMG toolholders designed for that clamping arrangement.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit insert for standard VNMG toolholders using a clamp and pin clamping system. Specific toolholder compatibility should be confirmed against ISCAR Isoturn series toolholder documentation prior to ordering.
Installation of indexable turning inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a safe, locked-out state and the spindle fully stopped. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamp to the correct seating torque per the toolholder documentation — do not estimate by feel. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert, as contamination will cause runout and premature edge failure. Confirm insert orientation matches the intended cutting direction before resuming machine operation.
