The ISCAR 5508089 is a CCMT3-1SM grade IC8250 indexable turning insert designed for precision external and internal turning operations. Built from solid carbide and coated via CVD process with a TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN multilayer stack, this insert delivers a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited for steel and stainless steel workpieces. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape provides a strong cutting edge geometry with a positive rake and positive side clearance. At 9.70 mm in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, it fits the Isoturn series and is held in place by screw clamping. Chip breaker style is SM, optimized for finishing and medium machining passes.
This insert is intended for CNC lathe and turning center applications where steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M) are the primary workpiece materials. The IC8250 grade offers high wear resistance across steel cutting and transitions to moderate wear resistance with added toughness for stainless steel. Maximum depth of cut reaches 0.098 inches (2.49 mm), making this insert appropriate for light finishing to medium stock removal. It is commonly used in job shops, production turning cells, and maintenance machining environments where consistent surface finish and tool life are critical. The SM chip breaker geometry manages chip control effectively across both material groups at typical finishing feed rates.
Designed for use with Isoturn series screw-clamp turning toolholders that accept CCMT style inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle (ISO size code 09T304, ANSI size code 3-1). Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clamping screw size before installation.
Indexable turning inserts are installed and replaced by machinist or tooling technicians during CNC lathe setup or toolchange procedures. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before accessing the turret or toolholder. Use the correct torque wrench and clamping screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert. Inspect the pocket seat and shim for damage or debris before installing a new insert to ensure proper seating and edge geometry.
