The ISCAR 5508051 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the grade designation IC908 and a TiAlN coating applied via a PVD process. The insert follows the XCMT170508MF geometry, featuring an X-shaped insert shape code, a C clearance angle, and an M tolerance class. The 0.031-inch (0.80 mm) corner radius balances edge strength with surface finish capability. The MF chip breaker geometry is designed for controlled chip flow across a wide range of cutting conditions. This insert is sized under Insert Size Code 170 and conforms to ISO 13399 standards, making it compatible with ISO-compliant toolholders used by CNC machinists and turning center operators in production environments.
The IC908 grade with TiAlN PVD coating is suited for universal application across multiple workpiece material categories, including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, general steels, and high-temperature alloys, corresponding to ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S. It is well-suited for finish to semi-finish turning passes on CNC lathes and turning centers where consistent tool life and chip control are required. The XCMT geometry and MF chip breaker make it a strong choice for interrupted or continuous cuts in mixed-material production runs.
Designed for use in ISO 13399-compliant XCMT-style toolholders. Primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, P, and S indicate compatibility across hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, carbon and alloy steels, and heat-resistant superalloys.
Turning inserts of this type are seated and secured by a CNC machinist or toolroom technician during setup. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and seating screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to avoid insert movement or fracture. Inspect the insert pocket for damage or debris before seating a new insert.
