The ISCAR 5506616 is a square indexable drill insert designed for use in DR-TWIST series indexable drills. Manufactured from solid carbide and coated via CVD with a TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN multilayer coating system, this insert carries the IC9080 grade designation, which is engineered for machining cast iron and steel. The insert features a 16 mm inscribed circle, a 0.219 inch thickness, and a 1.2 mm corner radius. The SOMT style with DT chipbreaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation during drilling operations, making it suitable for production environments where consistent hole quality is required.
This insert is intended for use in metal-cutting drilling applications on CNC machining centers and drill presses where indexable tooling is standard. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel, corresponding to ISO material codes K and P. The DT chipbreaker geometry is suited for through-hole and blind-hole drilling at moderate to high cutting speeds in these material groups. Installation is performed by machinists and tooling technicians as part of a planned insert change or tooling setup cycle.
Designed for use in ISCAR DR-TWIST series indexable drill bodies that accept SOMT 160512 inserts with a 16 mm inscribed circle.
Insert changes should be performed with the machine powered off and the spindle fully stopped. Use the appropriate Torx or insert-clamping key specified for the drill body to seat and torque the insert screw; do not use substitute drivers. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination can affect insert seating and hole accuracy. Proper insert orientation must be confirmed before resuming cutting operations.
