The IRWIN HANSON 8465 is a hex rethreading die designed to restore damaged or corroded external threads on bolts, studs, and threaded rod. It cuts a 1-8 UNC thread profile in a right-hand direction using a fixed, non-adjustable carbon steel construction. The hexagonal body allows a standard wrench or die stock to drive the tool without slipping. Plumbers, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and general maintenance professionals reach for rethreading dies when fastener threads are too damaged to accept a nut but the fastener itself is still structurally sound and worth saving.
This die is suited for field repair and shop use wherever 1-8 UNC threaded fasteners are found. Common applications include restoring threads on anchor bolts, equipment mounting studs, pipe flanges, and structural hardware in both residential and light commercial settings. The fixed design means no setup adjustment is required - the die cuts at the standard UNC thread specification as delivered.
Designed for use on 1-8 UNC external threads; compatible with any standard hex die stock or appropriately sized wrench that fits the hex body.
A licensed mechanic, maintenance technician, or experienced tradesperson should perform rethreading work. Before use, clean loose debris and rust from the damaged fastener and apply a cutting lubricant to extend die life and improve thread quality. Drive the die slowly with steady, even pressure, backing off periodically to clear chips. Inspect the restored thread with a mating nut before returning the fastener to service.
