The IRWIN HANSON 8028 is a straight flute hand tap designed for cutting 10-24 UNC internal threads in through-holes and accessible blind holes. It features four flutes and a plug chamfer, which provides a moderate lead-in of approximately 3 to 5 thread chamfer length, making it well suited for general-purpose tapping in a wide range of materials. The tap is manufactured from carbon steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries a 2B class of fit, the standard tolerance class for most fastener and assembly applications. With an overall length of 2.375 inches and a thread length of 0.875 inches, it fits standard tap handles and T-handle wrenches used in production and maintenance work.
This tap is intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, electricians, and plumbers who need to cut or repair 10-24 UNC threads in metal components, electrical enclosures, conduit bodies, pipe hangers, and general mechanical assemblies. The 10-24 thread size is one of the most common fastener threads in light-duty mechanical and electrical work. Right-hand thread direction aligns with standard fastener convention. The plug chamfer style makes this tap a practical first-choice tool for most through-hole and sufficiently deep blind-hole applications where a starting or bottoming tap is not required.
Designed as a standard straight flute hand tap for 10-24 UNC thread cutting, compatible with T-handle and adjustable tap wrenches sized for the 0.194-inch shank diameter.
This tap is installed by a machinist or qualified technician using a tap wrench or T-handle; power tapping is not recommended for hand taps of this size without appropriate torque control. Always use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Back the tap off a partial turn periodically to break chips and prevent binding. Inspect the tap for cracks or chipped flutes before use, as a damaged tap can seize in the hole and break.
