The IRWIN HANSON 8024 is a straight flute hand tap designed to cut 8-32 UNC right-hand internal threads in through-holes and moderately deep blind holes. Built from carbon steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it features a plug chamfer with 4 flutes that guide chip flow and maintain thread accuracy during manual tapping operations. The 8024 produces Class 2B threads, which is the standard tolerance class for most general-purpose inch-series fastener applications. Overall length is 2-1/8 inches with a thread length of 3/4 inch and a shank diameter of 0.168 inch, making it compatible with standard tap wrenches and drill press tap holders.
This tap is suited for use in maintenance, repair, and fabrication work where 8-32 machine screw threads are required. Typical applications include threading tapped holes in sheet metal, aluminum, mild steel, and similar materials. The straight flute geometry works best in through-hole applications or shallow blind holes where chip evacuation is not a primary concern. Electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and general trade mechanics frequently use 8-32 taps when securing control panels, enclosures, brackets, and light hardware.
Designed as an OEM-style straight flute tap for cutting 8-32 UNC Class 2B right-hand threads; fits standard tap wrenches and holders sized for a 0.168-inch shank diameter.
This tap is installed by a machinist, maintenance technician, or qualified trade professional using a standard tap wrench or T-handle driver. Always drill the correct tap drill size before tapping, and use a cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Back the tap off periodically to break chips during tapping, particularly in deeper holes. Do not apply excessive torque - carbon steel taps are susceptible to breakage if forced or used in materials beyond their rated hardness range.
