The IRWIN 9423 is a hex rethreading die used to restore damaged or corroded external threads on bolts, studs, and threaded rod. It cuts a 1/4-28 UNF right-hand thread profile and fits a standard 1-inch hex wrench or die stock for torque application. The die is machined from carbon steel, giving it the hardness needed to chase threads on common fastener materials including mild steel and stainless. This is a field and shop tool used by plumbers, HVAC technicians, electricians, and general maintenance trades whenever a fastener thread needs to be restored rather than replaced.
This rethreading die is suited for both residential and light commercial service work where a 1/4-28 UNF thread specification is encountered. Typical applications include restoring threads on machine bolts, instrument fittings, and equipment fasteners that have been damaged by corrosion, cross-threading, or impact. The right-hand thread direction matches the standard fastener orientation used in the vast majority of trade and OEM assemblies.
Designed for use with standard 1-inch hex die stocks. Intended for rethreading 1/4-28 UNF right-hand external threads on bolts, studs, and threaded rod in trade service and maintenance applications.
A licensed technician or experienced tradesperson should ensure the damaged fastener shank is clean and free of debris before running the die. Secure the workpiece or fasten in a vise before applying torque to the die stock to prevent movement. Apply cutting oil to the die and fastener prior to use to reduce heat and extend die life. Do not force the die over severely deformed threads in a single pass — back off periodically to clear chips.
