The IRWIN 9318 is a hex rethreading die designed to restore damaged or corroded external threads on fasteners and threaded rod. Sized for 6-32 UNC thread, this die cuts right-hand threads using a standard 1-inch hex body, allowing use with a common wrench or rethreading die set handle. Constructed from carbon steel, it provides the hardness needed to chase and re-form threads on softer base metals commonly encountered in HVAC brackets, electrical enclosures, and plumbing fixtures. This is a single-piece die suited for field repair or shop maintenance work by licensed tradespeople and maintenance technicians.
This rethreading die is used when existing 6-32 UNC machine screw threads on equipment housings, panels, or fasteners have been stripped, cross-threaded, or corroded to the point where fasteners no longer seat correctly. Common applications include restoring threads on control panel screws, equipment cover bolts, and small machine screw fittings found in residential and light commercial HVAC equipment, electrical boxes, and plumbing access panels. It is suited for both field service calls and bench repair environments.
Designed for use on any external 6-32 UNC right-hand threaded fastener or threaded component requiring thread restoration. Compatible with standard 1-inch hex rethreading die handles and holders.
Rethreading dies are typically used by HVAC technicians, electricians, and plumbers during equipment service or installation. Before chasing threads on equipment, de-energize electrical systems and isolate any pressurized lines per applicable NEC or IFGC guidelines. Apply a thread cutting or lubricating oil to the die before use to reduce friction and improve thread quality. Do not use rethreading dies to cut new threads into unthreaded stock — they are intended for restoring existing thread profiles only.
