The IRWIN 63117 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in steel, cast iron, and other ferrous materials. Built from M35 cobalt steel, it delivers better heat resistance than standard high-speed steel, making it well suited for harder workpieces that generate significant friction. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at entry and lowers the thrust force needed to start the cut. At 17/64 inch (0.2656 inch) in diameter with a 4-1/8 inch overall length and a 2-7/8 inch flute length, this bit fits the standard jobber profile used across most bench-top and hand-held drill applications. It is sold individually and intended for maintenance and repair operations.
The 63117 is used in metal fabrication shops, maintenance facilities, and field service environments where drilling through steel plate, structural iron, pipe, and similar ferrous stock is routine. The bright uncoated finish means there is no coating to chip or peel, and the web-thinned, tapered web geometry reduces cutting resistance. The straight cylindrical shank at 17/64 inch diameter seats directly in standard three-jaw chucks without requiring an adapter. This bit is appropriate for licensed millwrights, pipefitters, ironworkers, and maintenance technicians who need a reliable ferrous-metal drill in this fractional size.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber drill for use in standard three-jaw drill chucks accepting a 17/64 inch straight shank. Primary workpiece materials are steel and cast iron. Part of IRWIN Series 631.
Installation is performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals using bench drills, drill presses, or hand-held electric drills. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before starting the cut. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant on steel workpieces to extend bit life and manage heat buildup. Always wear eye protection and secure the workpiece before drilling.
