The IRWIN 53404 is a Size 4 spiral flute screw extractor designed to remove broken or stripped screws with shank diameters from 9/32 to 3/8 inches. The spiral flute design bites into the damaged fastener as the extractor turns counterclockwise, converting drilling torque into extraction force. At 2-7/8 inches overall length, the 53404 fits standard drill chucks and is sized for the mid-range fasteners commonly encountered in HVAC equipment panels, plumbing fixture hardware, and electrical enclosure assemblies. Licensed tradespeople and experienced technicians use this tool when a fastener head has been rounded off or a bolt has snapped flush with a surface.
The 53404 is suited for residential and light commercial service work where broken fasteners must be cleared before reassembly or replacement can proceed. Typical applications include removing seized sheet-metal screws in air handler cabinets, broken machine screws in pump flanges, and stripped fasteners in electrical junction boxes. The 9/32 to 3/8 inch compatible screw range covers a broad band of standard and coarse-thread fasteners found across mechanical trades.
Designed as a Size 4 spiral flute screw extractor compatible with broken or stripped screws having shank diameters from 9/32 to 3/8 inches across general mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical applications.
A licensed mechanic, HVAC technician, or plumber should de-energize equipment and relieve any system pressure before attempting fastener extraction. Use a center punch to start a pilot hole in the broken fastener, then drill a pilot hole sized per the extractor manufacturer's drill size chart before inserting the extractor. Turn the extractor counterclockwise with a T-handle or reversible drill set to reverse; avoid excessive side-loading, which can snap the extractor in the bore. Wear safety glasses throughout the procedure.
