The IRWIN 1727 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting internal metric coarse threads in through-holes and open-ended applications. Built from carbon steel, it features a plug chamfer for general-purpose threading where the tap can run most of the way through the workpiece. The M6x1 thread size and 4-flute geometry provide balanced chip control and consistent thread form. With an overall length of 3 inches and a thread length of 1.5 inches, the 1727 suits standard bench and machine tapping operations across metal fabrication, maintenance, and repair work.
This tap is suited for use in machine shops, general metalworking, and field maintenance applications where metric coarse threads are required. The plug chamfer style makes it a practical choice for through-hole tapping in steel, aluminum, and similar materials. It is typically used in hand tapping setups or low-speed tapping machines. The right-hand thread direction and 2B class of fit match the vast majority of standard metric fastener assemblies encountered in industrial and mechanical maintenance work.
Designed as a general-purpose replacement or stock tap for through-hole M6x1 metric coarse tapping applications in maintenance, repair, and fabrication settings.
Tapping operations should be performed by a machinist or qualified technician familiar with threading tools and feeds. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before beginning. Apply appropriate cutting fluid to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Do not force the tap if resistance increases sharply, as carbon steel taps are more susceptible to breakage under side load than high-speed steel alternatives.
