The INTERNAL TOOL 83-1270 is a solid carbide Woodruff keyseat cutter designed for milling keyseat slots in shafts and mating components. It features a 0.375-inch cutter diameter and a 0.125-inch cutting width, with a straight tooth configuration and micrograin carbide construction that delivers consistent edge retention across a wide range of workpiece materials. The shank diameter matches the cutter diameter at 0.375 inches, and overall tool length is 2.5 inches. This cutter is used by machinists and toolroom technicians on CNC mills, manual knee mills, and horizontal milling machines where precise keyseat geometry is required.
This cutter is suited for keyseat operations in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. The micrograin carbide grade supports use in both general production and demanding materials such as superalloys and titanium where high-speed steel tooling would wear prematurely. The bright uncoated finish makes it well-suited for non-ferrous materials and applications where coating interaction with the workpiece is a concern. Typical install scenarios include shaft keyway preparation in rotating machinery, drive components, and power transmission assemblies.
Designed for use in standard 3/8-inch collet chucks and end mill holders on CNC and manual milling machines. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium per manufacturer specifications.
This cutter is installed by machinists using standard collet or end mill holder tooling rated for 3/8-inch shanks. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before mounting or removing the cutter. Confirm runout at the cutter OD before beginning the cut, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear and reduces slot accuracy. Follow the machine manufacturer and tooling guidelines for feed rate and depth of cut appropriate to the workpiece material and machine rigidity.
