The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 6212184 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for steel turning operations in CNC lathe and turning center applications. Manufactured from solid carbide with a CVD-applied TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN multilayer coating in grade TT8125B, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted steel cutting. The diamond insert shape with an 80-degree included angle and a 0.0310-inch corner radius provides strong cutting geometry with a negative rake angle. With four available cutting edges, this insert offers extended tool life and cost efficiency per edge for production turning environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shops and production facilities install this insert as a direct, repeatable drop-in for compatible toolholders.
This insert is suited for medium to finish turning of steel workpieces, corresponding to the P-code primary workpiece material classification. The PC chip breaker geometry controls chip flow during steel turning at moderate depths of cut up to 0.2560 inches. The CNMG 542 insert size code and a 0.6250-inch inscribed circle make it compatible with standard CNMG-format negative-rake toolholders used across a wide range of CNC turning machines in both small-shop and high-volume production settings.
Designed as a standard CNMG-format replacement insert for negative-rake turning toolholders accepting a CNMG 542 insert size with clamp-style holding. ANSI code CNMG542PCTT8125B and ISO code CNMG160608PC TT8125B can be used to cross-reference compatible toolholder systems.
Installation of indexable turning inserts is performed by qualified CNC machinists or tool-setup technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing an insert. Use the correct torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer's specifications when tightening the clamp screw, and inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surface for debris or damage before seating a new insert. Dispose of worn carbide inserts in accordance with applicable facility and local regulations.
