The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 6212172 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for precision metal removal on steel workpieces. Built from solid carbide with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, this insert delivers consistent cutting performance and thermal wear resistance in turning operations. The diamond-shaped insert body carries a negative rake geometry and a wiper edge (WT chip breaker) that improves surface finish at standard feed rates. With four cutting edges per insert and a 0.0470-inch corner radius, it balances edge sharpness with tool life on ferrous materials. Installed in compatible CNMG toolholders, it suits general-purpose turning in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is intended for turning steel in both roughing and semi-finishing passes. The WT chip breaker geometry is suited to moderate depth-of-cut applications, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.1970 inches. A wiper edge provides improved surface finish without requiring a reduction in feed rate. The neutral hand orientation allows the insert to be used in a range of CNMG clamp-style toolholders. Machinists and CNC operators in production turning, repair, and general machining work are the primary users of this insert.
Designed for use in clamp-style CNMG toolholders accepting a size 433 insert with a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle. ANSI code CNMG433WTTT8115B; ISO code CNMG120412WT TT8115B. Intended primary workpiece material is steel.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC technician with the machine powered off and the spindle fully stopped. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert; do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a fresh edge. Follow the cutting tool manufacturer and machine builder recommendations for feeds, speeds, and coolant application when machining steel.
