The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 5520513 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT series, designed for precision finishing operations on difficult-to-machine materials. It carries the ANSI designation VBMT331FG and ISO designation VBMT160404FG, coated via CVD process with alternating layers of Al2O3 and TiCN for high wear resistance. The insert measures 0.654 inches in length with a 3/8-inch (0.375 inches) inscribed circle, a 0.016-inch corner radius, and a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) geometry. With a neutral hand orientation and positive rake and side clearance, it delivers controlled chip formation during finishing cuts with a maximum depth of cut of 0.059 inches. Installation is performed by licensed machinists and CNC operators.
This insert is intended for turning applications on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces where high wear resistance and edge toughness are required. The FG chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing passes, producing consistent surface finishes on ISO material groups M and S. It fits toolholders designed for VBMT-style screw-lock inserts and is suited for both manual and CNC lathe operations in production and job-shop environments. The two available cutting edges support cost-effective use before replacement.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for VBMT331-style screw-lock turning toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Compatible with toolholders referencing ANSI insert code VBMT331 or ISO insert code VBMT160404. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel (ISO group M), superalloys, and titanium (ISO group S).
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque procedure for screw-lock VBMT inserts. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp screw for debris or wear before seating a new insert. Do not exceed the manufacturer-specified depth of cut for this insert geometry, as overloading a finishing-grade insert can cause premature edge failure.
