Product Description

The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 5515088 is a VNMG-style carbide turning insert engineered for steel and stainless steel machining applications. It carries the ANSI designation VNMG331 and ISO code VNMG160404MT, and is manufactured in grade TT5100 with a CVD-applied Al2O3/TiCN/TiN multilayer coating. The 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape provides a sharp, low-included-angle geometry suited to finishing and profiling passes. With 4 usable cutting edges, a negative rake, and negative side clearance, this insert is designed for toolholders with clamp-style insert retention. The 0.016 inch corner radius and MT chip breaker geometry make it appropriate for both roughing and medium machining operations on steel and stainless workpieces.

This insert is used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes for external and internal turning of steel and stainless steel components. The VNMG platform is a common choice in production turning environments where toolholder rigidity is high and surface finish consistency is required across multiple parts. The MT chip breaker targets applications requiring reliable chip control across a range of depths of cut, including interrupted roughing passes and medium-stock-removal finishing on P- and M-category workpiece materials.

Key Features

  • Grade TT5100 carbide with CVD-applied Al2O3/TiCN/TiN coating for moderate wear resistance and toughness on steel and stainless steel
  • 35-degree diamond insert shape (ANSI: VNMG331 / ISO: VNMG160404) with 4 cutting edges for extended tool economy
  • MT chip breaker geometry rated for roughing and medium machining operations
  • 0.016 inch corner radius for a balance of edge strength and surface finish capability
  • Maximum depth of cut up to 0.098 inches; inscribed circle of 0.375 inches
  • Neutral hand orientation compatible with standard VNMG clamp-style toolholders

Compatibility

Designed for use in VNMG-style clamp-type turning toolholders accepting a 3/8 inch inscribed circle insert with a negative rake seat. Primary workpiece material categories are Steel (P) and Stainless Steel (M) per ISO classification.

Installation Notes

Installation of turning inserts is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Before indexing or replacing an insert, confirm the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secured in the turret. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new edge to ensure proper support and repeatability.
