The IMPORT BDNA-20712 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 5/8-11 UNC internal threads in through-holes and moderately deep blind holes. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a gold oxide coating, it provides solid wear resistance and lubricity during threading operations. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads of lead — makes it the go-to choice for most general tapping applications where the tap can pass fully through or where a starter thread is set before finishing. Four flutes provide adequate chip clearance in a range of workpiece materials. Overall length is 3-13/16 inches. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance mechanics use this tap with standard tapping attachments, drill presses, CNC machines, or hand tap wrenches.
This tap is suited for threading operations in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and similar machinable materials. The H3 thread limit designates a tolerance class that produces threads fitting standard UNC go/no-go gauge requirements and works well with most commercial fastener fits. The straight flute geometry means chips are pushed ahead of the tap, making it most effective in through-hole applications or with proper cutting fluid and chip-clearing intervals in blind holes.
Designed as a standard straight flute plug tap for use with any tap wrench, tapping head, or machine tapping attachment accepting 5/8-11 UNC tooling with a standard shank profile.
Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being threaded to extend tool life and improve thread quality. For hand tapping, use a calibrated tap wrench and back off a half turn periodically to break chips. When using power equipment, set torque limits appropriate to the machine and tap size to avoid breakage. Always inspect the tap for wear or chipping before use and discard any tap showing visible damage to the flutes or chamfer.
