The IMPORT -20927-5 is a mechanics-length drill bit designed for general-purpose metal drilling in professional and industrial settings. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, it measures 31/64 inch (0.4844 inch) in diameter and features a split point tip with a 135-degree drill point angle for fast, accurate starts without center punching. The Weldon shank with three flats prevents slipping in the chuck. At 4-7/8 inches overall length with a 3-1/4 inch flute length, this bit suits compact drilling applications where clearance is limited. It is a right-hand cut tool intended for use in standard drill presses, hand drills, and CNC setups.
This drill bit is suited for drilling carbon steel, cast iron, high alloy steel, high tensile strength alloy, stainless steel, and general steel workpieces. The mechanics length designation makes it a practical choice for automotive, mechanical, and maintenance trades where shorter bit length improves rigidity and reduces deflection in tight quarters. The spiral flute type with a regular spiral promotes efficient chip evacuation during through-hole drilling. Web-thinned construction reduces feed pressure and extends tool life in harder materials.
Designed for use with primary workpiece materials including carbon steel, cast iron, high alloy steel, high tensile strength alloy, stainless steel, and steel. Fits standard Weldon-style chucks and tool holders accepting a three-flat shank configuration.
Secure the Weldon shank firmly in a compatible chuck or holder, ensuring set screws engage all three flats before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel or high alloy materials to manage heat, even though this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Power down and lock out the drill press or machine before changing bits or adjusting chuck position. Follow applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements and shop safety protocols when operating rotary cutting tools.
