The IMPORT -20870-F is a Letter F mechanics drill bit designed for fast, accurate hole-starting in a wide range of metal workpieces. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on entry and requires no center punch on most surfaces. The Weldon flat shank with three flats locks securely in compatible chucks to prevent slipping under torque. Overall length is 3.625 inches with a flute length of 2.125 inches. Right-hand spiral flutes clear chips efficiently during operation. This bit is suited for professional machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworking trades.
This mechanics-length drill bit is intended for production and maintenance drilling in carbon steel, cast iron, high alloy steel, high tensile strength alloy, stainless steel, and general steel workpieces. The shorter mechanics length provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, making it well-suited for drill press work, CNC setups, and hand-held drilling where precision and reduced deflection matter. The general-purpose classification covers a broad range of everyday metal drilling tasks in fabrication shops, maintenance environments, and industrial facilities.
Designed as a general-purpose replacement or addition for mechanics-length drill bit sets requiring a Letter F (0.2570 inch) diameter with a Weldon flat shank. Compatible with drill presses, CNC drill fixtures, and hand drills equipped with chucks accepting a Weldon flat shank configuration.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tradespeople familiar with metal drilling procedures. Secure the Weldon flat shank fully in the chuck before operation, ensuring all flats are engaged to prevent slipping. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel or high alloy materials to extend bit life and maintain cut quality. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
