The HOUGEN 12728 is a high speed steel annular cutter designed for clean, fast hole cutting in ferrous metals. It cuts a 7/8-inch diameter hole to a maximum depth of 2 inches, removing only a core of material rather than reducing the entire slug to chips. The M2 high speed steel construction handles the heat and wear demands of production drilling, while the titanium nitride (TiN) coating extends cutting life and reduces friction. The 3/4-inch Weldon flat shank with two flats locks securely into compatible magnetic drill press chucks, preventing slippage under load. Licensed electricians, ironworkers, pipefitters, and structural fabricators rely on this cutter type for bolt holes, conduit knockouts, and structural connections.
The HOUGEN 12728 is suited for drilling through mild steel, stainless steel, and general steel stock in both shop and field environments. Typical applications include panel fabrication, structural steel erection, mechanical contractor work, and any trade task requiring precise, burr-minimal holes without a pilot drill setup. The Weldon shank interface is standard across magnetic drill platforms used in construction and industrial maintenance settings.
Designed for use with magnetic drill presses and annular cutter holders accepting a 3/4-inch Weldon flat shank. Compatible material applications stated by the manufacturer include mild steel, stainless steel, and general steel.
Annular cutters of this type are installed by licensed tradespeople or qualified fabricators using magnetic drill presses or drill press stands rated for the shank size. Before mounting the cutter, de-energize any nearby electrical equipment and secure the workpiece fully. Apply cutting oil to the cutter tip during use to manage heat and extend tool life. Inspect the shank seating and set screws before each use to confirm the cutter is fully locked in the chuck.
