The HOUGEN 12718 is a high speed steel annular cutter designed for fast, clean through-hole drilling in metal plate and structural steel. It cuts a ring of material rather than a solid slug, reducing the cutting force required and extending tool life compared to twist drills. The cutter measures 9/16 inch in diameter with a 2-inch depth of cut, making it suitable for thicker stock work. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating reduces friction and improves wear resistance. The M2 high speed steel construction handles both mild steel and stainless steel applications. A 3/4-inch Weldon flat shank with two flats provides a secure, anti-slip connection in compatible magnetic drill press chucks.
This annular cutter is used in structural steel fabrication, ironwork, and on-site steel erection where magnetic drill presses are the tool of choice. The 2-inch depth of cut accommodates heavy plate, beam flanges, and multiple-layer assemblies. Material applications include mild steel, stainless steel, and general steel stock. It is typically installed and operated by ironworkers, boilermakers, structural fabricators, and mechanical contractors who require repeatable hole accuracy without pilot drill setup.
Designed to fit magnetic drill presses and annular cutter arbors that accept a 3/4-inch Weldon flat shank with two flats, which is the standard connection type across most industrial magnetic drill platforms.
Installation and operation should be performed by qualified tradespeople familiar with magnetic drill press equipment. Before mounting the cutter, ensure the magnetic drill is de-energized and the chuck arbor is clean and free of chips. Secure the Weldon flat shank firmly in the set screws of the arbor to prevent rotation under load. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being drilled to maintain cutter temperature and prolong tool life.
