The HOUGEN 12640 is a high speed steel annular cutter designed for clean, fast hole cutting in ferrous metals. Built from M2 grade high speed steel with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended cutting life and reduced friction compared to uncoated cutters. The 12640 cuts a 1.25 inch diameter hole to a depth of 1 inch in a single pass, removing only a thin ring of material rather than a solid slug. It mounts via a 3/4 inch Weldon flat shank with 2 flats, compatible with standard magnetic drill presses and drill press adapters that accept Weldon-style tooling. Licensed tradespeople and metal fabricators rely on this cutter for structural steel work, ironwork, and fabrication tasks.
The HOUGEN 12640 is suited for drilling through mild steel, stainless steel, and general steel stock in both shop and field environments. It is a go-to tool for ironworkers, pipefitters, structural fabricators, and maintenance mechanics who need accurate, burr-minimal holes without requiring pilot hole drilling. Its compact geometry allows use in tight clearance situations where a twist drill setup would be impractical. Typical applications include beam drilling, angle iron, plate steel, and structural steel framing.
Designed for use with magnetic drill presses and drill press arbors that accept a 3/4 inch Weldon flat shank with 2 flats. Compatible with mild steel, stainless steel, and general steel material applications.
Installation and operation should be performed by qualified tradespeople familiar with magnetic drill press safety and metal cutting procedures. Secure the workpiece and verify the magnetic drill base has a solid, flat contact surface before energizing. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the base material to maximize cutter life and cut quality. Inspect the shank seating and set screws before each use to confirm the cutter is fully seated and locked in the arbor.
