The HILLMAN FASTENERS 48118 is a box of 50 Type 17 star drive exterior wood screws designed for structural and general-purpose fastening in outdoor lumber applications. Each screw measures 6 inches in length with a 1/4 inch diameter and features a Tite Black ceramic coating that passes 1000-hour salt spray testing, making it suitable for pressure-treated lumber, decking, fencing, and other exposed wood assemblies. The coarse thread profile and serrated shank reduce splitting and improve pull-through resistance in dimensional lumber. These screws are intended for installation by carpenters, deck builders, and general contractors working on exterior construction.
These screws are well-suited for residential and light commercial exterior applications including deck framing, ledger boards, fence rails, and treated lumber connections. The Type 17 point self-drills into wood without pre-drilling in most applications, speeding up installation. The star drive recess provides better torque transfer and reduced cam-out compared to Phillips drive fasteners. The Tite Black ceramic coating is specifically formulated to resist corrosion in contact with ACQ and CA treated lumber commonly used in modern exterior builds.
Designed for use in exterior dimensional lumber applications including decking, fencing, and treated wood framing. Suitable for use with ACQ and CA pressure-treated lumber commonly specified in residential and light commercial exterior construction.
Installation should be performed by qualified carpenters or construction tradespeople following applicable local building codes. Use a star drive bit sized to the recess to avoid stripping. While the Type 17 point reduces the need for pre-drilling, pilot holes may be required near board ends or in hardwoods to prevent splitting. Verify fastener specifications against local code requirements for structural connections, especially ledger board and deck frame assemblies.
