The HERTEL K010368AS25 is a thread forming tap designed for right-hand, through-hole threading applications in metalworking and manufacturing environments. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish in ductile materials. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride for increased surface hardness and reduced friction. It measures 2.5 inches in overall length with a 1 inch thread length and features a plug chamfer with 3 to 5 chamfered threads to guide entry into the workpiece. Installation is performed by machinists and tool and die technicians working on ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in production and job shop settings where thread quality and tool longevity are priorities. The 1/4-20 UNC thread size is one of the most common fastener thread profiles in general mechanical assembly, making this tap a frequent choice for fixture building, equipment fabrication, and component manufacturing. The H4 thread limit provides the controlled oversize tolerance needed for standard plated fastener fit. The titanium nitride coating extends tool life in higher-volume applications and reduces the need for heavy cutting fluids.
Designed for use in standard 1/4-20 UNC through-hole thread forming applications in ductile metals and compatible materials. Fits standard tap holders and tapping heads sized for a 0.255 inch shank diameter with a 0.191 inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread - consult a thread forming drill chart before setup. Secure the workpiece and use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil recommended for the workpiece material. Ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface before driving to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. This tap does not produce chips but does require adequate lubrication to manage the increased torque associated with thread forming operations.
