The HERTEL K010354AS85 is a thread forming tap designed for creating 10-32 UNF internal threads in ductile and malleable materials without cutting chips. Unlike cutting taps, this plug-chamfer forming tap cold-forms the thread profile by displacing material, producing stronger threads with better surface finish. Constructed from high-speed steel with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and reduced friction during the forming process. The H4 thread limit accommodates standard tolerance requirements for 10-32 UNF threaded fastener fits. Machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople use this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand-tapping applications.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in materials such as aluminum, brass, copper, mild steel, and other ductile metals commonly encountered in light manufacturing, HVAC equipment fabrication, electrical enclosure work, and mechanical assembly. The plug chamfer (3 to 5 chamfered threads) makes it appropriate for through-holes where the tap can pass completely through the workpiece. Its compact shank diameter of 0.194 inches fits standard tap holders and collet chucks sized for small-diameter taps.

Thread forming taps require a forming tap drill size, which is larger than a standard cutting tap drill - consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure proper tap alignment to avoid tap breakage, which is more difficult to extract with forming taps due to the absence of flutes. This operation is typically performed by machinists or skilled tradespeople following applicable shop safety and workholding practices.
