The HERTEL K010349AS is a thread forming tap designed for creating internal threads in ductile metals without cutting, using plastic deformation to produce stronger, chip-free threads. Built from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bottoming tap features a 10-24 UNC thread form and a 1-2 thread chamfer that allows threading to within one or two threads of a blind hole bottom. The overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.875 inches and a shank diameter of 0.194 inches. It carries a H4 thread limit, indicating a controlled tolerance class appropriate for standard UNC fits. Machinists and toolroom technicians use this tap in production and maintenance applications where clean, strong internal threads in blind holes are required.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in soft to medium-hardness ductile materials such as aluminum, copper, brass, and low-carbon steels. The bottoming chamfer design makes it the correct choice as a finishing tap when threads must extend as close as possible to the bottom of a drilled or pre-formed hole. It is commonly used in machine shops, manufacturing maintenance departments, and fabrication environments where 10-24 UNC fastener threads are a standard requirement.
Designed as a standard 10-24 UNC bottoming thread forming tap compatible with tap handles, tapping heads, and CNC tapping attachments accepting a 0.194-inch round shank with a 0.152-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - standard cut tap drill sizes do not apply, as the forming process displaces material rather than removing it; consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter for 10-24 UNC. Ensure the workpiece material is ductile enough for cold forming before use. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil to reduce forming torque and extend tool life. Secure the workpiece firmly and align the tap perpendicular to the hole before applying torque to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage.
