The HERTEL K010340AS85 is a thread forming tap designed for right-hand, through-hole threading in 8-32 UNC applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap delivers improved surface hardness and lubricity for extended tool life in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The plug chamfer with 3 to 5 chamfered threads allows for smooth entry and progressive thread engagement. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a 0.75-inch thread length.
This tap is suited for machine shop, maintenance, and trade installation work where tapped blind or through holes at the 8-32 UNC standard are required. Typical applications include threading sheet metal, aluminum, mild steel, and similar ductile materials in HVAC equipment frames, electrical enclosures, and mechanical assemblies. The 2B class of fit produces a standard tolerance thread acceptable for most commercial fastener applications. The H3 thread limit designation suits typical 2B fit requirements. Installation is performed in drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand tapping equipment.
Designed for through-hole thread forming operations in 8-32 UNC applications using standard tapping chucks, drill presses, or CNC rigid tapping setups that accept a 0.168-inch shank diameter with a 0.131-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps - consult a thread forming tap drill chart for the correct forming drill size for 8-32 UNC before drilling. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned axially before engaging to prevent tap breakage. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil to the tap and workpiece material to reduce forming forces and extend tap life. Power down and lock out any machine tool before changing or inspecting the tap.
