The HERTEL K007280AS is a spiral point STI tap designed for cutting STI (Screw Thread Insert) metric coarse threads in through-hole applications. Ground from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap is built for threading M2.5 x 0.45 metric coarse holes that will accept helical wire inserts such as Heli-Coil style fasteners. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead into the workpiece, distributing cutting forces across several threads for controlled entry. With 2 flutes and a spiral point geometry, chips are pushed forward ahead of the tap rather than packing in the flute, making it well suited for through-hole work in metals and engineered plastics. Overall length is 1-15/16 inches and the part weighs approximately 0.2 pounds.
This tap is used in precision manufacturing, maintenance, and repair operations where damaged or stripped M2.5 threads need to be restored using a thread insert system. Typical applications include small-bore thread repair in aluminum housings, electronic enclosures, aerospace components, and machine frames where original thread integrity cannot be maintained with a standard retap. The STI thread form produces an oversize thread that accepts a wire insert, restoring the original M2.5 x 0.45 thread profile after installation. Machinists, tool and die technicians, and MRO professionals are the primary users of this tap.
Designed for cutting STI metric coarse threads in M2.5 x 0.45 applications where helical wire inserts will be installed to restore or reinforce original thread profiles.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with STI thread insert systems. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping, use appropriate cutting fluid for the material being threaded, and apply consistent forward pressure while backing off periodically to break chips. Always verify the correct STI drill size has been used prior to tapping, as STI pre-drill diameters differ from standard metric drill sizes.
