The HERTEL H08712192 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for cutting external NPT threads on a lathe or CNC turning center. Manufactured to the 16ER insert style, it produces right-hand threads at 18 threads per inch (TPI) to the NPT thread standard. The insert carries a TiC/TiN multilayer coating that extends cutting edge life when threading pipe and fittings in ferrous and alloy materials. With a 3/8-inch (0.375 inches) inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.146 inches, it seats securely in compatible 16ER toolholders. Machining professionals and toolroom operators rely on this insert for accurate, repeatable NPT thread profiles in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for external threading operations on pipe nipples, couplings, and fittings where NPT taper thread forms are required. It is appropriate for use on manual lathes, CNC turning centers, and threading attachments where the toolholder accepts the 16ER laydown insert geometry. The right-hand cutting orientation makes it the standard choice for conventional NPT threading passes. Applications span general machining shops, oil-country tubular goods work, and any operation requiring reliable pipe-thread form accuracy at 18 TPI.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use threading insert for toolholders accepting the 16ER laydown insert style with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and 0.146-inch nominal thickness.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians following standard carbide insert seating procedures. Power down and lock out the spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified value using the correct Torx or hex key. Inspect the insert pocket and shim for damage before seating a new insert to ensure correct thread form geometry.
