The HERTEL H08702177 is a laydown threading insert designed for external thread cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the 16ER insert style, this solid carbide insert carries a TiC/TiN coating and a manufacturer grade of HG630TR, combining substrate toughness with surface hardness for extended tool life in threading applications. It produces a partial profile 60-degree thread form and covers a pitch range of 0.50 mm to 3.00 mm (48 to 8 TPI), making it suitable for a broad range of unified and metric thread standards. The insert measures 3/8 inch inscribed circle and 0.146 inches thick. Machinists and CNC operators in production and job shop environments are the primary users.
This insert is suited for right-hand external threading operations on steel, alloy steel, and similar machinable materials. The 60-degree partial profile geometry allows threading across multiple pitches without changing inserts, supporting flexible production setups. Typical install scenarios include high-volume threading on bar-fed lathes and manual threading passes on conventional turning machines where consistent thread form accuracy is required. The HG630TR grade and dual-layer coating support both wet and dry cutting conditions at moderate to high surface speeds.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for 16ER-style threading insert seats used in standard external threading toolholders accepting a 3/8 inch inscribed circle laydown insert.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and insert screw per the toolholder manufacturer's specification to ensure proper seating without cracking the carbide. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before installing a new insert.
