The HERTEL G837588 is a spiral point plug extension tap designed for cutting 10-24 UNC internal threads in a range of materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap features a 2-flute spiral point geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole tapping applications. The H3 thread limit provides a controlled oversize tolerance appropriate for standard 2B and 3B class-of-fit thread requirements. At 4 inches overall length, the extended shank allows threading in recessed or hard-to-reach locations where a standard-length tap would not reach. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die tradespeople are the primary users.
This tap is used in production machining, maintenance and repair operations, and fabrication environments where 10-24 UNC through-holes are required. The reduced shank design accommodates standard tap holders and chucks. The spiral point plug chamfer is best suited for through-hole applications where chips can be displaced forward without obstruction. It is appropriate for use in soft steels, aluminum, brass, and similar machinable materials consistent with HSS tooling capability.
Designed for use in standard tap holders and chucks accepting a reduced shank configuration; suitable for cutting 10-24 UNC threads to a 2B or 3B class of fit in through-hole applications.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping speeds and cutting fluid requirements for HSS tooling. Secure the tap firmly in a properly sized holder before use, and ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement. Always use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Inspect the tap for wear or damage before each use; do not use a chipped or broken tap.
