The HERTEL E4041040 is a 4-flute cobalt square end mill designed for milling ferrous and high-temperature alloys in demanding machining environments. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers heat resistance and edge retention beyond standard HSS tooling. The 5/8 inch cutting diameter pairs with a 4 inch length of cut, making this an extra-long configuration suited for deep-pocket and side-wall milling operations. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating reduces friction and extends tool life. The 30-degree spiral helix promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. Machinists and CNC operators in job shops, production facilities, and maintenance environments rely on this geometry for consistent material removal.
This end mill is intended for use in vertical and horizontal milling machines, machining centers, and manual knee mills. The extra-long length of cut makes it appropriate for applications requiring reach into deep cavities, tall workpieces, or stepped features where standard-length tooling cannot access the full depth. Centercutting capability allows plunge entry into the workpiece without a pre-drilled start hole. Right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration is the standard orientation for conventional and climb milling in most shop setups.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or standard tooling selection for any milling machine or machining center accepting a 5/8 inch straight shank end mill. Confirm collet or end mill holder bore size matches the 5/8 inch shank diameter before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is powered down before changing tooling. Use a properly sized collet or end mill holder — do not exceed the recommended stick-out beyond what is required for the operation, as excessive overhang reduces rigidity and accelerates tool wear. Verify runout with a dial indicator after clamping before beginning a cut.
