The HERTEL C.E11.1746 is an extra length twist drill bit designed for deep-hole drilling applications where standard-length bits cannot reach. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, this bit measures 11/16 inches (0.6875 inches) in diameter, with a 12-inch flute length and an 18-inch overall length. The 118-degree split point promotes accurate starting and reduces the need for a center punch on most materials. The oxide finish provides a degree of lubricity and heat resistance during cutting operations. This bit is suited for machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, electricians, and maintenance professionals who routinely drill through thick steel, structural members, or deep assemblies.
Extra length drill bits are specified when access depth exceeds the reach of jobber-length or stub bits. Common applications include drilling through deep steel fabrications, pipe flanges, structural steel sections, electrical panels with deep standoffs, and mechanical assemblies requiring reach beyond standard tooling. The two-flute design efficiently evacuates chips during deep drilling. General-purpose grade designation makes this bit appropriate for mild steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials in both shop and field environments.
Designed as a general-purpose extra length drill bit compatible with standard drill chucks, magnetic drill presses, drill presses, and hand drills accepting straight-shank tooling in the 11/16 inch diameter range.
This bit is installed by a machinist, ironworker, electrician, or maintenance mechanic in a standard drill press, magnetic base drill, or heavy-duty hand drill with a compatible chuck. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and apply cutting fluid when drilling ferrous metals to extend bit life and reduce heat. Reduce feed pressure as the bit exits the far side of the material to prevent grab or bit breakage. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
