The HERTEL C.E08.1230 is an extra length twist drill bit designed for through-hole drilling in metal, wood, and general-purpose materials where standard-length bits cannot reach. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, it measures 8 inches overall with a 5.5-inch flute length and a 0.4844-inch cutting diameter. The 118-degree split point angle suits general-purpose drilling across a range of workpiece materials. Machinists, millwrights, pipefitters, and maintenance technicians reach for extra length bits when drilling through thick stock, structural members, or deep-set bosses that exceed the reach of jobber-length tooling.
This bit is suited for shop and field applications requiring extended reach — including drilling through pipe flanges, structural steel, thick plate, or stacked materials. The two-flute geometry promotes chip evacuation during deep-hole drilling. The oxide surface treatment provides a mild degree of lubricity and corrosion resistance compared to bare HSS. General-purpose grade construction makes it appropriate for use in drill presses, magnetic drills, and hand-held electric drills running at appropriate speeds for the diameter and material.
Designed as a general-purpose extra length drill bit compatible with standard drill chucks accepting a 0.4844-inch shank, including drill presses, magnetic drills, and hand-held electric drills.
Installation of this bit should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with proper drill press and hand-drill operating procedures. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and select a spindle speed appropriate for the cutting diameter and material being drilled — excessive speed for the diameter will accelerate edge wear. Apply cutting fluid when drilling ferrous metals to extend tool life and improve hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use; a dull bit increases heat, reduces accuracy, and raises the risk of breakage in deep-hole applications.
