The HERTEL 89324248 is a taper shank drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal, wood, and similar materials. It accepts a No. 3 Morse Taper (3MT) shank, making it compatible with drill presses and lathes equipped with a matching taper socket or sleeve. The cutting end features a 118-degree point angle, a standard geometry suited to a wide range of workpiece materials. The bit is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish that provides basic corrosion resistance and reduces friction during the cut. Overall length is 11 inches, with a flute length of 6.375 inches, and the cutting diameter is 63/64 inch (0.9844 inch decimal).
This drill bit is suited for job shop, maintenance, and production drilling operations where a near-one-inch diameter hole is required. The 3MT taper shank provides a secure, self-holding connection in compatible spindles, making it appropriate for drill presses and turret lathes used in industrial and commercial settings. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics are the typical installers. The general-purpose grind works across mild steel, cast iron, aluminum, and plastics without requiring a specialty point geometry.
Designed for use in drill presses, lathes, and milling machines fitted with a No. 3 Morse Taper spindle socket; a 3MT-to-straight-shank sleeve or drift key may be required depending on the machine configuration.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance mechanics familiar with Morse Taper tooling. Clean and inspect both the taper shank and the spindle socket before seating to ensure full metal-to-metal contact; debris or burrs in the taper bore will prevent proper seating and can cause the bit to spin or pull out under load. Use a proper drift key in the spindle slot to remove the bit — never strike the chuck or spindle body to dislodge it. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and operate at a feed rate and spindle speed appropriate for the workpiece material and diameter.
