The HERTEL 89320972 is a screw machine length drill bit ground from high-speed steel and designed for general-purpose drilling in metal, wood, and plastic. Wire size 52 corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.0635 inches. The 118-degree split-point geometry produces a self-centering entry that reduces walking on flat surfaces. At 1-11/16 inches overall length, this stub-length format fits tight clearances and short-travel drill presses where a jobber-length bit would overhang or flex. The bright, uncoated finish is standard for general HSS tooling and accepts cutting fluids without compatibility concerns. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users.
This bit is suited for production drilling, tap-hole preparation, and fixture work where a small-diameter stub-length tool is required. The short flute length of 11/16 inch limits chip pack in shallow-depth applications and improves rigidity compared to longer-flute alternatives. Right-hand cut geometry is compatible with all standard CNC and manual drill press spindles rotating in the conventional clockwise direction. It is sold individually but carries a minimum order quantity of 12 units, making it practical for shop stock replenishment.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit suitable for standard drill chucks, collet holders, and quick-change systems that accept small-shank wire-gauge tooling.
Install and remove this bit only with the drill press or machine powered off and the spindle fully stopped. Verify chuck or collet seat is clean and free of chips before seating the shank to prevent runout. Apply a cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend edge life when drilling ferrous stock. Discard the bit if the cutting edges show visible chipping or if the diameter measures below tolerance, as regrinding wire-gauge bits at this diameter is impractical in most shop environments.
