The HERTEL 8850557 is a ceramic turning insert designed for high-speed metal cutting applications in CNC and manual turning operations. This round-profile insert features a 1/2 inch (0.5000 inch) inscribed circle and a 5/16 inch (0.3150 inch) thickness, ground to a G tolerance with a C clearance angle and 7-degree relief. The titanium nitride (TiN) coating is applied via PVD process over a ceramic substrate, improving surface hardness and wear resistance at elevated cutting temperatures. Grade HP610CA is formulated for demanding turning applications where tool life and edge stability are priorities. The insert is neutral hand, making it suitable for both left- and right-hand toolholders. Total weight is 0.12 pounds per insert.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning of hardened steels, cast irons, and high-temperature alloys in production machining environments. The round insert shape (shape code R) provides multiple cutting edges per insert, reducing per-edge tooling cost on high-volume runs. The RCGX style designation indicates a clamp-held, round, 7-degree relief insert with an X chip breaker geometry. It is used in both horizontal and vertical CNC turning centers as well as manual lathes equipped with compatible RCGX toolholders. Typical applications include shaft turning, bore finishing, and contour work where a round insert profile provides continuous edge engagement.
Designed for use in standard RCGX-style clamp-held turning toolholders with a 1/2 inch inscribed circle insert pocket. Verify toolholder insert size code 104 and clearance code C before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secured in the turret before seating or indexing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to tighten the clamp screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque. Inspect the insert pocket seat and clamp for damage or debris before installing a new insert edge.
