The HERTEL 83240598 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for drilling into tough ferrous and heat-resistant materials. The bit features a 1-1/16 inch cutting diameter paired with a 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to seat in standard 1/2 inch drill chucks and milling machine spindles without requiring a larger toolholder. The 135-degree notched split point reduces walking and decreases the thrust needed to start a hole. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating helps extend tool life by increasing surface hardness and reducing friction. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians use this bit when standard high-speed steel tooling is not adequate for the material at hand.
This drill bit is suited for general-purpose production drilling and maintenance applications where the workpiece material demands more heat and wear resistance than standard HSS. Primary and secondary target materials include hardened stainless steel, heat-treated alloy steel, and high-temperature alloys. The reduced shank design makes it practical for shops equipped with 1/2 inch capacity drill presses, CNC machining centers, and magnetic-base drills where full-shank bits of this diameter would not fit. Coolant is not required but can be used to further extend tool life during high-cycle production runs.
Designed as a general-purpose reduced shank drill bit for use in 1/2 inch capacity drill chucks on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and handheld magnetic-base drills. Primary workpiece materials include hardened stainless steel, heat-treated alloy steel, and high-temperature alloys.
Install and tighten the shank securely in a 1/2 inch drill chuck before operation; verify runout is within acceptable limits for the application. Secure the workpiece with a vise or clamp before drilling — never hand-hold the part. Apply consistent feed pressure appropriate to the material hardness to avoid work-hardening, particularly in stainless and alloy steels. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and remove the bit from service if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
