The HERTEL 83238873 is a screw machine length drill bit sized to Letter S (0.3480 inches decimal), designed for high-productivity drilling in metal fabrication, machining, and industrial maintenance applications. Built from heavy-duty high-speed steel with an oxide coating, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on contact and lowers thrust requirements compared to a conventional 118-degree point. Web thinning further reduces cutting resistance at the chisel edge. At 3-1/16 inches overall length, the stub-style body offers added rigidity in drilling fixtures, drill presses, and CNC turret setups where standard-length bits flex or deflect.
This bit is suited for use in production machining environments where close-tolerance hole sizing and consistent performance across multiple holes are required. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks and collet holders. The 1-3/4-inch flute length accommodates moderate-depth holes typical in screw machine and short-run production work. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional drill press and machine tool spindle rotation. The oxide finish provides mild lubricity and corrosion resistance during storage and cutting.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for NAS 907-specification screw machine length drill bits in Letter S sizing, compatible with any standard drill chuck or collet holder accepting a 0.3480-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by qualified machinists or trained maintenance technicians familiar with rotating cutting tools. Ensure the drill chuck or collet is fully tightened and the workpiece is securely fixtured before beginning operation. Always operate within the spindle speed and feed rate range appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the point geometry is compromised.
