The HERTEL 83238808 is a screw machine length drill bit sized to letter L (0.290 inches) with a 135-degree split point and a web-thinned tip geometry. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide coating, it is designed for heavy-duty drilling in metals and other hard materials where a shorter, stiffer flute length reduces deflection and improves hole accuracy. The split point starts without a center punch and cuts aggressively from contact. Overall length is 2.75 inches with a flute length of 1.5625 inches and a straight cylindrical shank measuring 0.290 inches in diameter. This bit meets NAS 907 specification and is suited for production and maintenance drilling applications.
Screw machine length drill bits are the go-to choice when rigidity matters more than reach. The reduced overall length compared to jobber-length bits makes this format preferred in tight-clearance applications, drill press work, CNC turret setups, and production environments where chatter and wandering must be minimized. Machinists, maintenance mechanics, and tool-and-die professionals use this bit size range for tapping prep, clearance holes, and close-tolerance work in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials. The oxide finish provides modest lubricity and corrosion resistance during storage and use.
Designed as a standard screw machine length drill bit for use in any drill press, CNC turret, or hand drill chuck that accepts a 0.290-inch straight cylindrical shank. Fits the letter L size range (0.250 to 0.300 inches) for interchangeability with other NAS 907 compliant tooling.
Install in a compatible chuck and tighten securely before operation. Verify spindle speed is appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before beginning the cut. Wear eye protection and secure the workpiece to prevent rotation. Inspect the cutting edges and web for wear before each use and replace if chipping or dulling is present.
