The HERTEL 74148701 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-precision drilling in demanding materials. Built from solid carbide grade C2, this bit measures 3/64 inches (0.0469 inches decimal) in diameter with an overall length of 1.5 inches. The 135-degree split point promotes accurate starting without a center punch and reduces walking on hard surfaces. A slow spiral flute geometry and web-thinned, parallel web configuration help clear chips effectively while maintaining rigidity in short-length drilling applications. Licensed tradespeople and machinists working in production and maintenance environments rely on this geometry for consistent hole quality in tough substrates.
This drill bit is suited for drilling cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, titanium alloy, and tool steel. The screw machine length body - shorter than jobber length - provides added rigidity and reduced deflection, making it well matched to drill press, CNC, and turret lathe applications where hole location tolerance is critical. The bright uncoated finish keeps the carbide substrate exposed, which is appropriate for dry cutting or when coolant is introduced externally. Coolant-through capability is not available on this model.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine drill bit in the HSSC135-SS series, suitable for use in standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting a straight cylindrical shank in the 3/64 inch diameter range.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with carbide tooling. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and confirm runout is within acceptable limits, as carbide is brittle and sensitive to side loading. Power down and de-energize all equipment before changing tooling. Avoid intermittent or interrupted cuts without confirming the setup is rigid, as shock loads can fracture solid carbide at small diameters.
